5 Fun Facts: Burrowing Owls

Writer's picture: Palouse WildlifePalouse Wildlife

Our animal for the month of February is the Burrowing Owl! These little birds are fascinating! Check out these 5 fun facts!

  1. The burrowing owl is a terrestrial owl, meaning it lives on the ground instead of in trees. As such, this owl will often run away or flatten itself against the ground instead of flying when threatened!

  2. Unlike many other owls, the burrowing owl is diurnal. This means that it is active during daylight hours.

  3. This owl will often line its burrow with dung, presumably to mask its scent from predators and attract insects for food.

  4. This owl is only about the size of a Robin, making it one of the smallest animals in the world!

  5. The burrowing owl has no sense of smell!

Check back soon for more information on these great little owls!
