Check out our five fun fox facts (and say that five times fast)!

  1. A group of foxes is called a “skulk” and a female fox is called a “vixen.”

  2. The red fox has incredible hearing (quite possibly the best hearing of all mammals)!

  3. Although red foxes are part of the canine family (related to dogs), they have retractable claws, just like a cat!

  4. Red foxes have amazing night vision. An extra layer at the back of each eye reflects light forward through the eye again, doubling their capacity to see.

  5. The red fox is believed to have a sense known as magnetoreception, meaning that the fox can detect Earth’s magnetic field. When hunting in deep snow, their eyesight doesn’t help much in locating their prey because of the snow cover. So, they must rely more heavily on their sense of hearing instead. Researchers have found that the closer a red fox can align itself towards the North Pole, the better chance they have of catching their next meal in deep snow!
