Motion Parallax

Writer's picture: Palouse WildlifePalouse Wildlife

Have you noticed that Burrowing Owls seem to enjoy playful poses, with their heads tilted to the side, or in some cases, with heads almost completely inverted? These owls are not just being silly- they are actually maximizing their ability to see! They are practicing something called "motion parallax!" It is a very neat skill that they develop to make up for the fact that they don't have much ability to move their eyes within their eye sockets. So instead, they move their entire head! You can learn more about this neat phenomenon from the Owl Research Institute.
