One of the things a caretaker aims to maintain when rehabilitating wildlife is something called homeostasis which is defined as “a self-regulating process by which a living organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions.” While we work hard to keep our animals in the safe zone of homeostasis, it can be easy to forget that we, too, need the same balance to stay healthy. Any rehabber will tell you that maintaining mental, emotional and physical homeostasis can be a constant challenge.
Our passion for wildlife inspires us to share with you all the fascinating things that make wildlife so amazing. While this brings us so much joy and satisfaction, we also have to keep our own homeostasis in mind as we expend energy to create these materials through the labor of unpaid volunteers.
In order to give each animal the time and focus it deserves in our Wildlife Education Corner for Kids and simultaneously promote the health and well-being of our volunteers without asking too much of them in too short of a time period, we will now be featuring a new animal of the quarter, rather than a new animal every month. This will give us a full 3 months to dive into the inner world of each animal without the pressure of ill-filling time constraints.
We will also be restructuring our presentation schedule to ensure a good balance all around. Thank you so much for your support and understanding as we adapt to the changes of the current season to accommodate the needs of our volunteers who give so much to keep PWRR running. For the last quarter of 2023, we will continue to explore cottontails. We have a few features up our sleeves that we think you’ll love, so remember to check back periodically to see what fun we have in store for you!
